A part of the inaugural Grand Chess Tour in 2015, the Sinquefield Cup was the fifth and final leg of the 2021 Grand Chess Tour. Also held in the Chess Capital of the United States, this elite event featured 10 of the strongest chess players in the world. In round 9, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave played a quick draw against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov to secure his victory, while his closest rivals were unable to catch him on the final round day. Vachier-Lagrave became the first two-time clear winner of the event, having also taken first place in the 2017 edition. For his efforts, Vachier-Lagrave earned $90,000 in prize money, as well as a bonus of $50,000 for finishing second in the overall 2021 Grand Chess Tour. Three American players, Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So, and Leinier Dominguez all tied for second place in the 2021 Sinquefield Cup, each earning $45,000 prize for their efforts over nine rounds of contentious chess play.

The World Chess Hall of Fame is a nonprofit museum that celebrates chess through the lens of art, history, and culture. Located directly across the street from the Saint Louis Chess Club the World Chess Hall of Fame's unique venue is a regular host for Grand Chess Tour opening and closing ceremonies.
